From Boca Raton to Jupiter volunteers participated in the 2007 International Coastal
Cleanup picking up thousands of pounds of trash. At select sites, volunteers filled out
special data cards detailing the types of trash picked up. This information will be
furnished to the Ocean
Conservancy to help shape public policy in the fight against litter affecting our
marine environment.
Over 4,700 volunteers picked up over 62,000 lbs of trash from Palm Beach County
beaches, lakes, and participating neighborhoods. From the information provided by
volunteers, the source of most of the trash and debris comes from shoreline and
recreational activities (47.3%) and smoking-related activities (42.6%).
