PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS

Palm Beach County Thoroughfare Beautification Grant: Over $12 million dollars in landscaping projects have been funded along major thoroughfares throughout Palm Beach County as a result of a landscape beautification grants program coordinated by KPBCB. Matching funds are provided for state roads by the Metropolitan Planning Organization / Florida Dept. of Transportation.

Education and Beautification Grant for Elementary Schools: Educational experiences and performances emphasizing environmental stewardship, and funding for campus beautification is provided to qualifying elementary schools through this grant program administered by KPBCB.

Great American Cleanup (GAC): Each spring since 1994, KPBCB has coordinated The Great American Cleanup that encourages Americans to participate in hands-on activities that dramatically improve their communities, creating healthier, cleaner and safer environments across the nation. Activities include cleaning up waterways and seashores, picking up litter, planting trees, beautifying parks and conducting recycling collections. GAC is sponsored by Keep America Beautiful (KAB) and is coordinated locally by KPBCB inpartnership with the Solid Waste Authority. In addition, volunteers are involved in the painting and fixing up of run-down buildings through the “Rebuilding Together” initiative. The GAC 2008 is scheduled for Saturday, April 19 to coincide with Earth Day.

International  Coastal Cleanup: KPBCB has been the county coordinator for the annual International Coastal Cleanup sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy each September since 1996, adding additional cleanup sites at area beaches and the Lake Worth Lagoon each year. This year, on September 15, over 4400 volunteers participated in Palm Beach County picking up tons of trash from area beaches, lakes, canals, neighborhoods and roadways.

Cleanup and Beautification Support: KPBCB supports local cleanup and beautification initiatives throughout the year by providing logistical supplies and support to volunteer groups. This includes sponsorship of events such as “Paint Your Heart Out” which is held to paint the homes of homeowners in need, particularly the elderly, handicapped and families with children. KPBCB also sponsors a program to give away special pick up tools to groups to make litter cleanups more efficient.

Special Programs: KPBCB sponsors special programs that support our mission. This has included many grant programs that support beautification efforts throughout the county. For example, we have undertaken a “Hurricane Reforestation” program, replacing tree canopy damaged by the recent hurricanes, in 16 different locations in Palm Beach County. Currently, we are participating in restoration of the only “Ecoart” project in South Florida located in Dreher Park, West Palm Beach.

Information Clearinghouse: KPBCB promotes and provides information to the general public about reducing, reusing, and recycling and volunteer opportunities supporting programs such as “Adopt a Highway” (State), “Adopt a Road” (County), “Adopt a Park” (County), “Adopt a Street” (Municipal), and “Adopt a Spot” (Solid Waste Authority).

Community Outreach: KPBCB participates in community events and presentations in order to reach thepublic with its “clean it up, fix it up, and keep it up” message.
