International Coastal Cleanup
Volunteer Information
It's Paradise, but we call it home - Florida. Yes, it's America's playground
with fun under the sun. But we know there is a price to pay. So we're willing
to get involved to make sure the future is beautiful too. This is, after all, our
heritage, our responsibility, our future, our Florida!
Make plans to organize your family, friends, co-workers, schools, civic and church
groups to participate in the International Coastal Cleanup at a site near you. Pre-registration is requested, so that we
may have adequate supplies on hand. Volunteers will receive T-shirts (while supplies
last), trash bags, vinyl gloves, data cards and pens.
- Great community service opportunity for students!
- Children and students are welcome with proper supervision. Some sites may require a
chaperone/student ratio so check with the site coordinator.
- Volunteers will complete data cards to document types of
collected debris. Data will be provided to the The
Ocean Conservancy, which compiles an annual report to combat sources of debris through
enforcement and education.
- Volunteers should be prepared to possibly get wet and should dress accordingly,
including old, sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
- Volunteers are encouraged to wear sunscreen, sunglasses and visors/hats.
- Although vinyl gloves are provided, volunteers are encouraged to bring garden or work
gloves for comfort and additional protection. Pick up tools may be provided at some sites.
- Refreshments may be provided at some sites, however, volunteers may wish to bring
bottled drinking water.
Volunteer Guidelines
- Please make sure you have registered at
the registration table.
- After you are finished, please return to the registration table to turn in the data
card. Make sure you understand the system for recording data. The volunteer coordinator is
there to help you. Click here to see data card.
- All trash bags should be left at the locations designated by your volunteer coordinator.
Please make sure they are securely tied when full and placed for pick up.
- No consumption of intoxicating liquids, beverages, or illegal drugs will be allowed
during the clean-up.
- It is suggested that you work in teams of at least two to four; with one person
recording the data. Even though it may be a hassle to fill out data cards, many beneficial
laws passed, and programs were developed, based on information collected.
- Wear gloves and use caution when picking up sharp objects. Watch out for broken glass
and metal.
- Do not pick up hypodermic needles or other hazardous waste such
as paint, used motor oil, tar balls, automobile batteries, etc. Note location and report
it to Site Coordinator.
- Do not lift anything too heavy. Report location of large debris to your volunteer
coordinator.
- Do not approach large drums. They may contain hazardous wastes; even vapors can be
harmful. Leave the drum and report its location to the site coordinator.
- Avoid suspected hazardous substances or areas where herbicides were recently applied.
- Avoid areas where snakes, fire ants, jellyfish, crabs or other dangerous species may be
located. If you encounter domestic animals the best policy is to avoid them and leave them
alone. Do not attempt to handle injured marine animals/birds. Report their location to
your site Manager.
- It is recommended that volunteers work in teams of two to four: one should be designated
as the recorder, filling out the Ocean Conservancy's data card as the rest of the team
pick up debris. The information you record on the data card will be furnished to the Ocean
Conservancy and used for research and policy decision purposes. Please return the Data
Card to the Site Manager upon completion of your cleanup.
- If you are recylcing, designate one memeber of your team to carry a bag for recyclables
(usually blue bag). As the Site Manager where to leave these bags when you're finished.
